I think Doug has just surpassed my bourbon collection. Not necessarily in quantity, but he just bought a lot of high-end Blanton's. Three of these bottles aren't even sold in the states. Bastard!
Doug is new to the world of bourbon. He would drink it on occasion, but really didn't love it like the rest of us. I saw him start to come around the night and weekend of Lipman's wedding. He and Todd came over and we broke into my single barrel stash. We would drink a bottle 3/4 of the way and then switch. I don't know why, but it just worked out that way. Maybe we subconsciously left that 1/4 for Lipman. Kinda like pouring a little bit of your 40 on the ground for your homies except this stuff wasn't going on the ground.
He didn't solidify a taste for it until the night of 4/22/06 at my wedding reception. The Maker's Mark was flowing that night. In fact, about 3x as many Maker's Mark drinks were consumed than the drink that came in #2 on our bill. Doug, who was into wine and vodka, decided he loved bourbon that night. He loved it so much he was running around telling everyone (sometimes 2 or 3 times) that he loved the bourbon.
He called me today from a liquor store somewhere in the Caribbean quizzing me on prices. Some he knew were good deals, others he wasn't so sure. Blanton's kept coming up. Blanton's is good stuff. Really good stuff. I don't know if it is the best that there is, but it's pretty damned good.
For years I've had a bottle on hand for special occasions... which really didn't have to be all that special, just an occasion. Come to think of it, I've never really purchased a bottle myself. People give them to my dad around Christmas (it's a thing to do in KY) and he usually passes them on to me. I received a bottle as a wedding present.
My buddy Kevin, old fraternity roommate and now nerd accountant, shared a bit of his Special Reserve bottle with me during a visit to his place a few years ago. The regular stuff is damned good. The Special Reserve is whatever the next step up from "damned good" is.
So Doug called me and was asking about prices on the regular bottle and then started asking about the Silver, Gold, and Straight from the Barrel versions. This is the stuff that isn't available in the states. At the time, I was so flabbergasted, I got them all mixed up. Anyway, the prices he was quoting were good for just the regular stuff... little less this stuff that isn't available. I told him he couldn't go wrong with any of it.
Well, that bastard sends me this pic. He bought everything. Damn him.
Yeah, I'm jealous. I'm not all that concerned. He owes me. He has consumed my bourbon. Now it's my turn.
I hope he paid attention to the stoppers and made sure they were all different. Probably not. n00b.
The usual gang just departed the house and are headed home after welcoming in 2007 with the typical festivities of throwing darts, playing games (with Lipman thrashing us soundly), and watching Dick Clark (as much as you really can watch the poor guy now).
Someone around Lipman's subdivision was shooting off huge fireworks. A bunch of drunks were stumbling all over the neighborhood singing. I was tempted to get out the hose to give them a good New Year squirt.
2006 was probably my most active year ever. 2007 will have its own adventures.
I'm tired and the liver needs a rest.

I could go on. I've been very fortunate to be able to do a lot of things that I've wanted to do. There are still a number of things that I'd like to do, places to visit, and a lot of people I'd like to meet. All I know is that when an opportunity presents itself, you have to take advantage of it regardless of if you think you really have the time or if things may be tight financially for a bit because of it.

What was the last wedding you went to? Were you in the wedding?
My buddy, and my little bro (for all intents and purposes), Matt.
I was married in April and didn't think I was going to be able to make it to his. Matt's older brother spotted me $$ to fly up and be there.
Matt never asked me to actually be in his wedding. He didn't want to make me feel obligated to go. So I was told that he wanted me in it by Paul.
So this is the first wedding that I've ever been in where I was asked to be in it by someone other than the groom.
This was the 3rd wedding of the year for me. The first being Lipman's. The next being mine. I still have one more to go this year- my sister's. Unless she wises up and figures out that while the guy she is engaged to may be really nice, about 95% of the stuff that comes out of his mouth is total shit. He's one of those "It is always someone else's fault" types.
The very first Herschell Gordon Lewis movie that I ever watched. This is easily my favorite of the bunch.
St. Cloud, FL was never quite the same after the movie filmed there.
I'm partial to his "gore" films over the "biker" ones. The biker films are just as campy, but tend to move slowly.

Lipman rented the "remake". It was campy, but still lacked the charm from the original. Maybe it was because it was trying to be campy and the other one just "was".
BoingBoing has a posting on a beer that is being brewed using melted ice-caps.
The marketing spin (other than the novelty) is that they say the water is 2000 years old and has a softer and cleaner taste due to it coming from an ice cap.
If it makes it down to FL, Lipman and I will get some.
2 guys at the show beat the hell out of another guy and ended up killing him. It is definitely a tragic thing, but the old "lay of averages" comes into effect when you have large numbers of people in a single space and throw things in the mix that impair judgment.
I've been to many shows and other "arena" events and have witnessed many fights. You just have to make sure that the people that you are with are looking out for you and you are looking out for them.
If you are alone, then you really need to make sure that you aren't putting yourself in a bad situation. Do you really need to be right up against the stage or can you enjoy the show by standing a little farther back? Are you going to be part of that moshpit? If not, don't stand in areas where they will form and if one happens to form next to you, get the hell out.
The best example that I was part of was at an Alice Cooper show a few years ago. Todd, Lipman, and I were right in the middle of the floor and a couple of guys started getting into it (drunk). Todd and I grabbed and pulled Lipman back just as a stray elbow started coming his way. It would have caught him right in the side of the head.
