A little holiday cheer from Showcase Showdown
Most people think that this was originally a Quiet Riot song, but really their popular version is a cover too. 10 years before Kevin DuBrow and the other metal mask wearing boys released their version (and MTV staple), Cum on Feel the Noize was released by the UK Glam Rock band, Slade.
It has been covered a number of times in a number of ways. Here is one of the many punk versions.
This is why I love the Asylum Street Spankers cover of Black Flag's TV Party. It definitely isn't punk. It keeps the idea of shouting the names of television shows, but adds the twist of adding bits and pieces of various theme songs. They made this into a typical Spankers song.
This is from their Mercurial album. This album includes a rock-a-billy version of Paul Revere (Beastie Boys), and a more straight-up cover of Dance This Mess Around (B-52's). I had their version of Paul Revere played at my wedding reception (the dance floor stayed full).

Inspired by cherè.
The Dickies: Stukas Over Disneyland
I have daily moments like this.
Audio: Share a great love song.
My pick is "Tunnel of Love" by the Groovie Ghoulies. For some reason, the file I uploaded slowed way down- kinda like playing a 45 at 33 1/3. Weird.
Deleted the file.
For some dumb reason the Pittsburgh Pirates marketing dept. hired Me First & the Gimme Gimmes to play a series of post-game shows.
I love the band. I'd love to see that band. But that band really isn't going to be the taste of the mainstream baseball fan.
Seriously... what was that marketing team thinking?
The band started playing and then the band started to get booed.
I love this quote from the marketing director- "Their interpretations of the songs were a little harder than we expected". What did you expect, jackass?
Me First & the Gimme Gimmes has a new CD coming out in October. Can't wait.
What is your favorite cover song?
Question submitted by Ray.
This is freakin' impossible to answer. I'm into covers a lot more than most.
So I'll answer it with the last cover I listened to earlier today - The Asylum Street Spankers' rockabilly cover of the Beastie Boys' "Paul Revere". It's on their Mercurial album which has a few other covers (B-52's "Dance This Mess Around", Black Flag's "TV Party"). Excellent album. The Paul Revere cover was played during my wedding. The Spankers have a good cover of Prince's controversial (in its day) "Darling Nicky" available on their site.
Another favorite is Social Distortion's cover of "Ring of Fire". It's a great song and they do it right. Went to see a Social D concert a few years ago and I've never seen the House of Blues erupt like it did when they started playing this. Incredible.
My favorite cover band is Me First and the Gimme Gimme's. Back in the good ol' Napster days, I came across a few of their songs... loved them.. and went out and bought all of the albums they had released (what?!? file-sharing led to album purchases! - another post for another day). From that point on, I had them the day they were released.
A close second would be Richard Cheese - a few Richard Cheese songs also were played during dinner at my wedding reception.
Anyone who is into covers should take a listen to the "Coverville" podcast (coverville.com). Brian Ibbott does an excellent job putting his show together (often 2+ a week).
I have a pretty big weakness for covers.. even the bad ones. The ones I love the most are the ones where the band took the song and made it their own and didn't just do a straight cover that sounds like the original.
But going back to the actual topic- the all time favorite is the Muppet's cover of "Mahna Mahna". Most people think that this is actually a Muppet song, but it isn't. It was originally in a Swedish soft porn documentary called "Svezia, Inferno e Paradiso" and composed by a guy named Piero Umiliani.
